Colour

When it comes to the colours of Pups everything must stay these simple greys and blues. It encourages the cold and wintery surroundings in this once sunny summer location. The life and warmth will come from the characters them selves and how they act but the colour pallet must stay constant.

There are only a few exception. When the sun is setting a very pale yellow will be briefly present to show the end of the day is     drawing near, as sign that it's to late.


Finally you have the night. It's all darker blues, most greys replaced with this purple/blue darkness. It creates a feel all being lost. Regret. Game over.

Pup and Jenny Social Time

After drawing a rough scribbly version of Jenny and Pup for the animatic for so long I felt I needed a refresher on the characters. Also this blog felt it needed more images of Pup and Jenny just chilling out to help better show their relationship.

The Music

I'll be working with sound design student Tom Britton on making the music for Pups. When coming up for the visual style of Pup's music played a key role. It had to calming, cool and very light and dreamy. Most of the music that inspired Pups were bands like Mogwai,  Daughter and in a slightly more vague way Sagapool. All these sounds just suck you into the world without being to overwhelming which I think would match the feel of my film, nice, simple and can be enjoyed by almost anyone.

Tom has done a brilliant job of combining these factors together!

Even though this is just the rough I really feel this is a push in the right direction for Pups and am excited to see what way it'll go when it comes to the final film. He seems passionate about the film and hearing this small sample from him is very inspiring. Very promising.

The Life and Death of Jenny's Mum

Back in the early days of Pups Jenny's mum was apart of the plot in a much bigger capacity! She was going to be a contrast to Jenny's care free nature.

While Jenny's mother was a stay at home mother, working on her next novel, Jenny would be seen playing and having an adventure with her newly acquired seal friend.

Jenny's mum would also just miss seeing the amazing things Jenny was doing while she was stuck inside desperately trying to feel inspired.

It was quickly decided that this whole 'B story' was making the film to complicated. Cutting back and forth between Jenny and her mum would just make anyone feel positively sea sick!

I wanted to keep her mum in at some capacity and this can be seen in the storyboards. She was just going to be a throw away joke. Jenny walks in with Pup and her mum is so busy working on her computer that she doesn't even notice that her daughter has brought a seal into the home.

This got cut for many reasons:

1)Was it really that funny?
2)Feels weird to just see a new character so briefly.
3)The finale reveal of the clothes in the kitchen and her mum shouting her down was cut anyway so her sudden appearance and disappearance would seem even stranger!

As much as I would of liked Jenny to not be an orphan Jenny's mother had to be put down for the good of the film and was cut entirely.
